Chapter Eighteen Luke finally made it to the hospital just before visiting hours were over and found Lucky and Sonny fast asleep. Luke leaned against the door and cleared his throat. “You do a good imitation of me,” Luke said, as Sonny opened one eye. “I should shoot you for that remark,” Sonny said and stood up and stretched. Sonny looked at Luke with a cocky grin on his face and asked, “How’s Tammy?” “Great, she is a very lovely lady. Don’t take this wrong but I hope she takes up my offer to get off the streets,” Luke said taking the chair that Sonny had just got up, and putting his legs up. “What are you talking about?” Sonny asked him. “I offered Tammy a chance to change her life. She kind of reminded me of two women I know,” Luke said as he closed his eyes to take a nap. “I send you to one of the best hookers in town to have some fun and you think of your aunt and sister? Something is really wrong with you Spencer,” Sonny said shaking his head and leaving to make some calls about the custody suit. He told Luke he would be back in an hour, to see if they needed anything before heading home for good. “No, just my life,” Luke muttered as Sonny left opening one eye and looking at his friend strangely. He closed his eyes again and tried to dream about the day with Tammy. Lucky woke up about an hour later and found Luke reading the paper and eating some unidentifiable food from one of the food machines. “Hi, dad,” Lucky said, “Having fun?” Lucky pulled himself up to get more comfortable in the hospital bed. His side really hurt a lot more since his little stunt yesterday. He decided to tell Rick about it in the morning to see what he could about the pain. “Yes, I had fun. Rick told me about the tests before he left,” Luke said putting down the paper. “Did he get the results back?” Lucky asked, not knowing if he wanted to know or not. “No. They will not be done until tomorrow sometime. I’m sorry kiddo. I should have made sure your doctor knew what he was doing before trusting him with your recovery,” Luke said. “It isn’t you fault. I just hope Rick can do something to make my arm better,” Lucky said rubbing his other hand over it lightly. “I do too,” Luke said, taking a deep breath before going on. “I had a run in with your mother at the cemetery.” “What did she want?” Lucky asked coldly, looking up at his father, his face showing all the hate he felt for his mother at that very moment. “She said she is going to file for full custody of you and Lulu,” Luke said flatly, bracing himself for the explosion that he knew was coming. He didn’t have to wait long. “NO!” Lucky yelled, trying to sit up more, so he could get out of bed. “I’m not going to live with her. I will run away first,” Luke grabbed his shoulders and gently laid him back down. He looked Lucky right in the face and said. “Cowboy, Stop!” Luke ordered trying to get Lucky’s attention. Lucky made this strange little noise and his eyes were staring wide at the doorway. Luke looked up and noticed a nurse standing in the doorway holding some restraints in her hands. “Get out. I’ll handle this.” Luke yelled at her and she jumped back. Bobbie had showed up to take over and grabbed the nurse’s shoulders and gently pulled her back. She did stick close by just in case Luke needed any help. “Lucky, look at me,” Luke ordered, because the kid's eyes were still staring at the nurse. Lucky began to speak and found it harder to breathe as time passed. “I’m not living with her. She is nothing to me any more and no one can tell me differently,” Lucky yelled his words, but they were clipped because of the trouble he was having breathing. The pain in his side started to grow. He put his good hand on his ribs and held it tight. “You don’t have to live with her. I just wanted you to know she is going to fight for custody. I don’t care what the judge says about this. If this goes against us then they got to find us first because me, you and Lu will vanish from the face of the earth. I don’t care what happens to me but I do care about you and your sister. We’ll stay hidden until Lu is eighteen and then I’ll come back and face the music. Your mother isn’t going to win this one. Ok?” Luke said forcing Lucky to look at him. Lucky slowly calmed down and his breathing started to go back to normal but the pain wasn’t going away. It was slowly getting worse. Lucky looked at his father and asked, “Does she have a chance?” “I don’t know. I have a rotten past and she could use it against me but we will fight her with every thing we have and hope that the judge will listen to us. Hey, don’t worry about it kid. I haven’t let you down yet?” Luke asked. “No, you haven’t. You’re the one person I can always count on,” Lucky said. He grabbed his side, as pain shot right through him. Luke went to get him help, as Lucky curled into a ball to stop the pain. Bobbie came in to check up on him. She opened his gown, to check out his stitches and noticed that Lucky was bleeding again, but this time it was worse. She yelled for the nurse on call for more help and ordered Luke to leave the room. Sonny just walked into the room and was standing on the sidelines as Luke joined him. People rushed passed them and went right to work on Lucky. Luke looked at Sonny and said in a cold voice, “I don’t care what we do, she is going to pay for this. Laura doesn’t care what she does to him, just as along as she gets want she wants. Sonny, get my ex-wife out of my kids' lives for good,” Luke said and went to the window to watch as people rushed around working on Lucky. He felt so helpless because he could do nothing to help his son at the moment. Sonny got an idea and was trying to call Valentine, but his cell phone didn’t work. Sonny was at the desk trying to figure out what was wrong with it, when he noticed that the rooms had video recorders and saw the tapes running. He wondered if they had sound in them and a plan started to form. He was going to show the court all the pain Laura Spencer had caused her son. He hoped the tapes weren’t recorded over and went to find out about them. Luke could look after Lucky and Sonny was going to take care of Laura. He had a lot of work to do and very little time to do it. Lucky had to be rushed back to surgery because one of his cracked ribs fractured and lodged into one of his lungs. He had been slowly bleeding to death and no one knew it. Luke was in one of the waiting rooms while Lucky was being worked on. He paced back and forth waiting for some news on him. Luke kept looking at the clock every time he passed it. Brenda was on the couch as he paced. She had rushed right over as soon as she found out. Lulu had been staying with her and Sonny. The little girl was asleep beside her and was using Brenda's lap as a pillow. “You are going to wear a hole right through the floor. Luke, would you please sit down?” Brenda asked him. “I can’t. What is taking them so long?” Luke demanded. “It has been only an hour. Rick and Bobbie are doing everything they can for Lucky. He is strong and has made it this far,” Brenda said. “He wouldn’t be in this mess if it wasn’t for Laura. She was the one that got him upset in the first place. Right now, I wish she would vanish and never come back, “ Luke said coldly and started to pace again. Brenda shook her head and leaned her head back to close her eyes. His pacing was driving her crazy. Sonny had walked in a few moments later and said, “I have good news for you. I found some ammunition to use against Laura.” “What?” Luke asked. “Well, first she has been talking to Gail Baldwin and Valentine has a way to get Gail to open her files to the court. He found this little ruling that will fit our purposes. I also have tapes of her telling Lucky about his friends and his reaction. I also have you on tape dealing with the aftermath. We also have sound on the tape. I have someone working on the last one and no one is going to notice any part missing,” Sonny said. “You took off the part where I threaten to vanish!” Luke said and looked at his partner with gratitude. “You got it. I got the tapes in Valentine's desk and he made sure it was all legal like. When we go to court, Laura isn’t going to know what hit her,” Sonny said. “We have a problem. I have a very dark secret and Laura could use it against me. I will tell you about but before we go to court. I have to tell Lucky, as well,” Luke said. “What is it?” Sonny asked not knowing what to except. “I raped Laura back when she married to Scotty,” Luke said flatly and he walked to look out the window. Brenda looked at him in shock and Sonny was having trouble believing it. “You're joking?” Sonny said but knew he wasn’t. “No. I’m not and don’t ask me how she forgave me but she did and we had a great life together up until now. Sonny, everyday of my life I regret that moment in my life more than anything. I would do just about anything to turn back time but I can’t do that,” Luke said not looking at them. Sonny sat down and took a deep breath. “Why?” asked still trying to understand this. “Does it matter?” Luke asked. “Yes, to me it matters. I want to know why you could do that to anyone and especially to Laura?” Sonny asked him again. Luke told them everything from the moment he arrived in Port Charles to the time he and Laura figured out what the left-handed boy meant. Sonny listened and started to get a clear picture of the man he called partner. Luke finished and said, “You going to shoot me now?” Luke asked and his tone of voice was serious. “No. Hey, I ran a strip joint and had under aged minors work for me. I even gave them drugs and talked myself into thinking it was all right. I’m not the person to judge you and if Laura could live with it, then so can, I. I have changed and so do you. It took people loving us to do it. You had Laura and the others. I had Stone, Brenda, and Robin,” Sonny said. “Thanks understand. I just hope my kid does. I don’t care what everyone else thinks but Lucky is everything to me, as well as his sister,” Luke said and stood looking out the window, watching the cars lights flash by on the freeway. Brenda and Sonny went for a walk to give him time alone. Bobbie showed up a few moments later and placed a hand on his shoulder. Luke jumped and looked at her and demanded, “How is he?” “He is going to make it. He will be in recovery for a few hours and then we will move him back to his room. I would order you to go home but I know your not going to do it. Lucky will be out for a long time yet and he will not be talking much for a few more days,” Bobbie said. “I owe you one,” Luke said grabbing her and holding her tight. “Hey, he’s family and we don’t let down family. I’ll clean up and then I’ll be back. I will take Lu home with me,” Bobbie said, as she noticed the little girl fast asleep on the couch. “Ok, I think Sonny and Brenda need some time alone,” Luke said. “What happened?” Bobbie asked not liking his tone of voice. “I told them the truth about me and Laura,” Luke said. Bobbie didn’t have to ask what truth and put a hand on his shoulder. “How did they take it?” Bobbie asked. “Brenda didn’t say anything and said Sonny said he understood but I don’t know. How can he if I don’t myself ?” Luke said. “It will be okay. I know why you told them because if Laura used it against you, it can make the custody fight that much harder,” Bobbie said. “I know and that’s the problem. I can’t break my promise to him. I have to keep Laura out of his life or I might lose him forever.” Luke said and moved away. Bobbie knew this mood Luke was going in and she decided to wake up Lulu and clean up at home. Luke needed time alone to think and clear his head. Bobbie herself wanted to hurt Laura or help her vanish forever. Bobbie always thought that Laura caused more trouble then she was worth.
