Chapter 4 Emily put on her comfortable black shorts and loose lilac shirt. She picked up her green hair scruncie and pulled her into a ponytail. Her whole emotional and physical state was severely aching after today. Lucky had saved her life even when she didn't want him to and she was beginning to think someone was trying to send her a sign. She heard wind whistling and turned to close the window. Her eye's widened when she noticed someone entering. All she saw was the person’s hair until he faced up, “Nikolas?!” Emily exclaimed walking over to Nikolas, “What are you doing here?!” "I am here to see you. Are you ok?” Nikolas asked placing his hands on Emily's face. "I'm fine.” Emily answered as she shivered when Nikolas placed his hands on her face, “Nikolas, your freezing.” Emily closed the window and pulled one of the blankets off her bed, “Here.” She sighed as wrapping it around Nikolas. "What's wrong with you, huh? You trying to destroy everything sacred in your life?” Nikolas snapped feeling happy to see her but angered by her actions. "Lucky told you?!” Emily shouted. "Of course he did!” Nikolas replied. Emily walked away from Nikolas and fell onto her bed, “You weren't suppose to know. I… didn't want anybody to know.” Emily laid back and closed her eyes, “I don't want you yelling at me, Nikolas.” "I'm not going to yell, Emily.” Nikolas avoided eye contact with her and ignored her exposed skin, “But I am worried about you.” Emily leaned back as she sat up with her arms planted to support her, “Nikolas, you have no idea what's going on with me.” Nikolas pulled a chair in front of her and down, “Emily, I know we haven't been very close lately but you do mean a lot to me.” Emily sat up completely and laughed, “Yea, you’re little sister routine again.” Nikolas took her hands in his, “What if I told you… you're more than a little sister?” Nikolas had been thinking about this a lot lately. Emily laughed sadly, “You mean maybe like a bestest friend?” Nikolas shook his head, “You know what I mean.” Emily's smile faded, “What do you mean, Nikolas?” "Emily, I just mean we're more than friends.” Nikolas nervously told her. Emily grinned, “You're kidding right?” "No, I'm not.” Nikolas responded and stood up, “Emily, when I saw you with that guy I was… ” Nikolas trailed off. Emily giggled, “Nikolas, you were jealous?” Nikolas did nothing but look at her, “Oh my god, you were.” "But then I heard you tried to kill yourself and I was scared to death. What were you thinking, Emily?” "Nevermind that, Nikolas. I want to know how you feel about me and I want to know now.” Emily demanded and waited for his answer anxiously. Nikolas wasn't sure how to reply so he tried to avoid it, “Emily, I don't want you to die.” Emily balled her fists, “That's not an answer! Liz doesn't want me to die! Lucky doesn't want me to die and I know how they feel about me but you I never have any clue about!” "Is that why you tried to do this?” Nikolas questioned with fear. "No! Believe it or not my decision to take my life was all me! No one seems to notice that my life has been in complete turmoil! I can't remember the last time I was happy for more than a couple of hours! And I just couldn't take it anymore! I can't take no one caring! I can't take everyone moving on and me being left behind! I can't…” Emily couldn't hold her composure any longer and she burst into tears. Nikolas felt his heart sink as she fell to her knees sobbing uncontrollably into her hands. Nikolas knelt down to her and tried to hug her but she pushed him away, “Get away from me!” Emily ordered feeling like she had be defensive with everyone. Nikolas' eyes filled with tears, “Emily, please let me help you.” "No one can help me.” Emily whispered wrapping her arms around herself, “I'm all alone.” Emily cried rocking herself slowly. "Oh god, Emily.” Nikolas went to brush her hair out of her face but she retracted away from him, “Emily, don't you understand? You're not alone.” Emily nodded, “Yes, I am. Yes, I am.” She responded. "No! Your not.” Nikolas insisted and forgot her fear of him placing his hands on her face, “You'll never, “Nikolas paused looking at her with pleading eyes, “Ever know how much you mean to me. Never.” Emily's tears streamed down her face as she choked, “Really?” "Yes, Emily.” Nikolas wiped away her tears, “God, Emily, you will never be alone.” Nikolas held her hands tightly, “If you had never come into my life or if you left it suddenly… I'd be lost. I am so sorry I didn't make that clear before.” Nikolas confessed hoping that everything he felt for her was fully expressed. Seeing her there with the tears she had in her eyes and how long she had handled everything he realized she wasn't a child… She was an equal. Emily grabbed onto him and held tightly, “I'd be lost without you, too, Nikolas. I'm so sorry I scared you.” Emily closed her eyes and whispered. "Just don't do it again.” Nikolas joked and they both let a laugh escape, “You'll never be alone again, Emily. I promise.” Nikolas spoke softly now knowing Emily was more of a woman than he had ever expected or noticed before. Emily woke up and the first thing she noticed was that she wasn't sleeping in her bed. In fact she had no idea where she was. She rubbed her eyes and sat up. She observed all around her and after observing her surroundings she saw in the back yard somewhere. She looked up at the sky trying to remember what had happened. How did she end up in the backyard of the Quartermaine Mansion? She laid back down and felt something under her head she turned over and her eyes widened when she saw Nikolas sleeping next to her. She was using his arm as a pillow. She tried not to be surprised or nervous but it was very apparent that she was. She squirmed from under the covers and got up. She walked away from the blankets they shared last night and ran her hands half way through her hair, “What happened?” She whispered walking back and forth before hearing, “Emily?” Emily bit her lower lip and turned to see Nikolas sit up. Emily went over and sat next to him on the blankets again. Nikolas yawned, “Are you ok?” "I would be if I knew what the heck happened.” Emily mumbled. Nikolas slightly smiled, “Nothing except,” He paused and Emily's eyes widened, “Emily, don't worry! I told you I wasn't leaving you alone last night and you knew your parents wouldn't appreciate me in the house so we slept out here. But I don't think anyone came home so we're safe.” Nikolas joked and Emily sighed out of relief, “What did you think happened?” Emily shrugged and laughed slightly, “I honestly had no idea.” Emily looked over at him and his smile widened. Emily cleared her throat, “Remind me, again, why you didn't want to leave?” Nikolas' smiled faded, “After last night… I just couldn't imagine leaving you by yourself. That's all.” Emily nodded, “Oh, I see.” "I'm sorry if I caught you off guard, Emily.” Nikolas apologized. "No! Don't be. I was just… Surprised.” Emily laughed nervously. "Ok.” Nikolas responded and looked up at the blue sky, “It looks like it'll be nice today.” "Yea, It's sort of a weird thing to bring up right now but…" Nikolas chuckled, “What's so weird?” "Well, I just woke up next to you. Don't you find that a little weird?” "Maybe just a little.” Nikolas agreed, “But then again a lot of things are weird between us lately. Don't you think?” "True.” Emily shrugged, “The question we have to ask ourselves is do we want things to be normal again or change?” Emily questioned and turned to him. Nikolas laughed slightly feeling incredibly uncomfortable suddenly. Emily saw the look and heard the shaky noise he made feeling her heart sink, “I'm sorry. Forget I asked.” Emily begins to get up but he stopped her. She sat back down and tried to avoid his eyes but he forced her to look at him. Nikolas sighed and took her hand in his, “No, it's a good question and it deserves an answer.” "So… ?” Emily bit her lower lip waiting anxiously for his answer. "I just don't have it right now.” Nikolas regretfully said while looking into her eyes, “It's going to be really complicated if things change and… It'll still be complicated if it doesn't so it's more of a… Which complication do we want?” Nikolas let go of her hand in anguish, “That doesn't make any sense does it?” Nikolas brought his knees to his chest and ran his hands through his hair. Emily shook her head, “No, it makes a lot of sense.” Emily rested her chin on his shoulder, “I think we could both use some time to ourselves. Especially since I've been so…” Emily stood up, “Weirded out lately.” Nikolas looked up at her, “But you're ok now, right?” Emily nodded with a smile, “I think a few sessions with Gail Baldwin and I'll be back to my normal self.” Nikolas stood with a praising grin, “There's nothing normal about you, Emily Quartermaine.” Nikolas joked while Emily rolled her eyes. They gathered the blankets before heading back into the Quartermaine Mansion. Nikolas and Emily agreed not to see each other for awhile. Both had to work out issues within themselves and they had decided it would be better to take care of that before… if they got involved. Emily went up to her room, wrote in her diary about the weird past weeks, and then went back downstairs. She still felt like her life wasn't that great and what if Nikolas had decided he didn't want to be with her? Would she be bad all over again? The wild and outrageous thoughts ran through her mind. She hugged herself tightly as she looked at the sun setting through a front room window. Her bright colored orange shirt and white jeans seemed to glow. She fidgeted with her locket necklaces idly as she let her hair fall into her view. She was beginning to get lost in the clouds as the windows reflected the sun onto her skin and warmed her body. She was snapped out of her deep thoughts when she heard someone say, “Emily?” Emily turned around to see him standing there. Emily turned around and a wide smile spread across her face, “Jeremy?!” She squealed and ran to him. Jeremy grinned back and embraced her when she jumped up to hug him, “Jeremy!” She said holding him tightly, “Your back!” "I missed you so much, Emily.” Jeremy whispered. "I missed you, too! I didn't think you were coming back!” Emily said tearfully and pulled away, “Oh, Jeremy. I did something so stupid.” "You didn't…" Jeremy began to ask and Emily nodded before he could finish, “Em, why? Why would you do that?” Emily's tears fell as she spoke softly, “I didn't think anyone cared.” "Didn't you read my letter?” Jeremy questioning her remembering the last line, “I thought you would have gotten it by now.” "I did. But I only felt worse.” Emily explained feeling her heart sink at his look, “It gets worse.” "Wait, who stopped you?” Jeremy asked. "Lucky.” Emily responded, “After I had already jumped.” "What?!” Jeremy shouted. Emily swallowed hard, “I… let go of the railing and then he just came out of nowhere and saved my life. Barely.” "You mean… If Lucky hadn't been there you'd be dead right now?” Emily shrugged, “Yea.” Jeremy nodded, “Thank god for Lucky.” "I'm so sorry I… I owe you everything and still I wanted to off myself.” "It's ok.” Jeremy suddenly replied out of nowhere. "It's… ?What?” Jeremy took her hands in his, “What am I suppose to do, Em? Tell you, you were wrong for what you did and yell? I can't do that. I'm just so glad your still here.” He told her before hugging her again. Emily felt tears fill her eyes, “I am so glad you came back to me, Jeremy.” She whispered holding onto him tightly and knowing he'd make every bad thing disappear.
