Chapter 3 Emily sat on the roof ledge with tears streaming down her cheeks. It was the same place where Jeremy had saved her. She constantly wiped her tears as she read the letter over and over again: Dear Emily, I can't believe what happened. My dad found my mom and me again. I don't know how but he has. Mom and I have to leave Port Charles. I wish I could have told you in person but I just found out myself. Emily, I am so sorry that I couldn't tell you face to face but I had to get going right away. I would have loved to have stayed to at least say goodbye but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Maybe that's for the best. You know, sometimes writing a letter is so much easier. I really wish I could have said this to your face. It would have meant so much more. I just know it. Emily Quartermaine your an amazing person and no matter what anybody says please don't forget that. I would to have loved learning every little thing that makes you… you and I regret not meeting you earlier. If there is any possible way that I can get back to you, I will. I promise. I guess right now just wasn't meant for us. Sincerely, Jeremy P.S. I know your someone I could have loved. In fact… I'm pretty sure I already do. Emily sniffled and placed her hands on her face trying to silence her loud sobs. She looked up at the blue sky that had white clouds drifting by. She stood up on the roof ledge as she had once before and raised her hands reaching for the sky. She felt the cool breeze again brushing against her lightly as it did the night she had first attempted this. She bit back her bottom lip as the tears slid down her cheeks and into the brief space where her lips opened. She closed her eyes as she tightened her grip on the fire escape railing swallowing hard and not looking down. This time no one could stop her. The wind made her tears soak in to her skin and her shirt blew furiously against her. It blew so violently that she felt it was somehow urging her to just do it. She opened her eyes to gaze down one last time. hen she saw how far down it was and how busy everything below was she got a little more nervous than the first night she had tried to do it. She opened and closed her one hand that held the railing. She didn't want to live when no one cared. When no one tried to understand her. When no one cared whether she lived or died. She looked up at the sky again feeling closer to God and hoping for forgiveness. She used her free hand to grasp the silver cross around her neck hoping to send him some sort of signal then slowly began to let her hand loosen from around the railing… Lucky ran up the empty building's spiral staircase. He felt his heart beating so hard that it caused a sharp pain. He had seen Emily head into the building and never come back down. He waited for a few moments before racing up the stairs to the roof. He just had a bad feeling about all of this. He finally reached the door but it was jammed. He rammed it trying to get it to open but it wouldn't budge, "Come on!” Lucky cursed the door and began to pound his fist on the door, "Emily!” Lucky screamed trying to burst through. Emily heard the screams and whispered to herself, "Lucky?” Her hand tightened again around the railing as she saw the door moving as though someone were trying to get onto the roof with her, "It's now or never, Emily.” She told herself ignoring Lucky's screams and trying to prepare herself for the downfall. "Emily!!!!!” Lucky screamed again as loud as he could before bursting out of the door and out onto the roof. His heart fell when he caught a glimpse of Emily's hair as she let go, "Emily!!!!!!!” Lucky screamed and ran to the roof ledge. Lucky wasn't sure how he did it but he barely caught Emily's wrist, "Emily!” Lucky repeated and held her as tightly as he could. Emily opened her eyes and saw his tear filled blue eyes set on her, "Lucky?” Emily realized she wasn't gone. She was hanging on by a thread and she didn't want to be, "Let go." She told him. Lucky wasn't sure what was going on in her head, "What? I'm not going to let go!” "Lucky, let go!” Emily shouted back. "No! Now, grab onto me. I'll pull you up." Lucky told her. Emily knew he was trying to help but he couldn't, "No, Lucky, just let go." "I'm not going to let you go, Emily!” Lucky shouted trying to pull her up by her slight hold. Lucky could feel her slipping and had to stop or else he'd lose her for sure, "Emily, please. Whatever it is we can fix it." "No one can help." Emily cried shaking her head. Lucky's heart broke if she died he didn't know what he'd do, "Emily, ok, so maybe I can't fix it but I'll try and the least I could do is help. I'll do whatever I can, I swear. It'll get better I promise." Lucky pleaded with all he could but he knew by her demands she wasn't all there. Lucky felt her beginning to slip even more. He was holding on to nothing but her hand now, if she let go… she was gone, "Emily, please!” Emily's tears fell worse than ever before, "Please, Emily.” Lucky whispered with his own tears beginning to worsen. Emily closed her eyes and tried to decide whether to do it or not before Lucky said, "Please, don't do this to me. I care about you. I don't want to lose you.” Emily opened her eyes and saw how scared and serious Lucky was. She knew he wasn't just saying it to make her feel better. Suddenly, she grabbed onto Lucky. Slowly he pulled her up and over the ledge. They both stood breathlessly on the rooftop looking sadly at each other. Lucky didn't know what to do. He just took her hands and pulled her to him. Emily wanted so badly for someone to just be there and when Lucky looked at her she felt like he was that person. She hugged him tightly and fiercely hoping he'd just care. Lucky wrapped his arms around her as they both cried silently. Lucky pulled away first placing his hands on her face, "Don't you ever do that to me again.” Lucky told her and she nodded before they embraced again. Lucky made sure Emily was ok when he brought her to the Quartermaine mansion. Luckily, no one but Lila and Reginald were there so she didn't get much hassle for her sick look and weak stance. Lucky told her he'd be there first thing tomorrow and they'd figure something out. Emily promised Lucky she would at least let him try to fix everything for her and keep herself safe. Lucky sighed as he bounced up the steps to Liz's front door. He knocked once and Liz was right there, "Lucky!” She exclaimed before even seeing him and once she did grabbed onto him, "Oh, thank god. I was so worried.” Liz whispered holding him tightly, "Where were you?” Lucky pulled away and took her hand in his. He ran a hand through his house as he entered, "You wouldn't…" Lucky stopped when he saw someone was already there, "What the hell is he doing here?” "Lucky, Nikolas is over because I invited him. He was worried about Emily and I was worried about you and we thought if we put our heads together we could find you two.” Liz explained after closing the door and running to Lucky. "Elizabeth, I'd be lying to you if I said I was ok with you two putting anything together.” Lucky said with his hostile attitude. Liz rolled her eyes as though concluding the conversation, "You didn't answer my question. Where were you, Lucky?” Lucky sighed, "I don't know if I should be saying this in front of him.” Liz frowned, "Why not? We're all Emily's friends, aren't we?” Liz asked questioning their looks toward each other. "Emily's not sure anyone's her friend.” Lucky replied. Nikolas' look seemed to plead with Lucky's, "Lucky, please tell me what's happened to Emily? She's been so distant and I've tried to help but it's like nothing I do does any good. So, please if you know anything tell me.” Lucky remembered all the help Nikolas had given to Emily and Elizabeth plus how he seemed to be acting like a real friend to Lucky at least as much as he'd let him be, "Alright, but I gotta warn ya," Lucky gave them both a piercing look, "It's not pretty.” Nikolas and Liz sat down on the couch while Lucky sighed and began to explain, "I'm not exactly clear on every detail about why she did it or why she feels this way but…" Nikolas interrupted him, "Did what? What did Emily do?' Lucky laughed angrily, "Well, if you'd let me finish you'll find out.” "Sorry.” Nikolas apologized and urged him, "Go on.” "I followed Emily after we saw her in school.” Lucky gestured to Liz, "And she went into this empty apartment building that was so disgusting the rats wouldn't enter it but Emily's not real concerned with what her death place looks like.” Lucky blurted out. Liz's eyes widened, "Death place?! Oh my god. Emily's not… I mean she's not? Oh god, Lucky, please tell me Emily's not dead.” "She's not dead.” Nikolas and Liz let out a sigh of relief, "But she could have been.” Nikolas and Liz looked up at him quickly, "I didn't exactly make it.” "What the hell does that mean?” Nikolas asked suddenly surprising Liz and Lucky. "I got to the roof door but it was jammed and Emily had time to think about everything. Her terrible life and I guess everything she thinks she should kill herself for. So, I finally got through and when I did she had just jumped.” Lucky explained and Liz listened with tears beginning to fall. "But I thought you said she wasn't dead?” Nikolas said fearfully. "I just barely caught her.” Lucky added. They sighed out of relief again until Lucky cleared his throat, "But that's not the end of the story.” Liz choked, "It's not?” "No, when I caught her, Emily yelled and begged me to let her go. To just let her fall.” Lucky and Liz exchanged looks, "I didn't and I managed to talk her into letting me help.” "Help? Help with what?” Nikolas questioned. "I'm not sure yet. Right now she just wants to be alone.” Lucky replied. "And you think that's a good idea? For god's sake, Lucky, she almost killed herself tonight!” Nikolas stood up with anger. "Yea, Nikolas, I know I was there!” Lucky snapped. "I have to go see her.” Nikolas said to himself and them. "No! You don't! Emily wants to be alone and she's going to be!” Lucky yelled. "I almost killed, Emily.” Liz whispered just loud enough for Nikolas and Lucky to hear. Lucky sat next to her, "What are you talking about, Elizabeth?” "If I had… if you would have stayed behind like I told you to Emily would be dead. I almost killed Emily. She's one of my only good friends and I killed her.” Liz cried feeling lower than dirt. "But I was there Liz and Emily is safe as long as…" Lucky stopped when he noticed Nikolas was gone and the door was open, "Oh great.” Lucky got up and went to the open door just in time to see Nikolas car and a cloud of dust, "Nikolas!” Lucky called after but Nikolas just had to get to Emily.
